Opportunities for Volunteers
Volunteer opportunities are listed below. Staff supervisors may be contacted directly as listed or contact the Candora #248 office at 474-5011 or the Community Action For Children (CAC) office at 474-5655 for more information. If volunteer positions are currently full we will gladly take your application and add it to our list of "Candora Friends".
Volunteers are either informal or formal. Informal volunteers assist the Candora Society infrequently, with special events and not in an ongoing way. Formal volunteers are involved in a specific volunteer activity that is regularly scheduled ongoing. Both kinds of volunteers are equally important to the work of Candora.
Discovery Centre (DC) - Requires one volunteer per session to work directly with the staff and children in program implementation. Volunteers must complete a Security Clearance and a Child Welfare Clearance to work with children. The childcare centre (DC) also needs volunteers to do site maintenance, toy cleaning, snack preparation, etc. Contact the Discovery Centre Coordinator for further details.
Community Action For Children - Provides educational and recreational activities for children aged 0-6 years. It includes an entire spectrum of activities for children and adults. Volunteer opportunities are varied and some activities can be done at home. Ask your site staff or call the CAC office.
Community Lunch - Occurs once a week. An Outreach Worker from #248 coordinates this activity. Three to four volunteers are required to help prepare food, serve food, set up, and clean up. The time commitment would be from 9am - 1pm on Thursday's.
Drivers - Are needed for various activities, such as donations pick ups, and special events. Drivers must be included on the Society's insurance before they can drive Candora vehicles.
Friday Active Living - Adults are needed to clean and organize toys and supplies as well as helping participating parents prepare and serve a nutritious lunch. Tables and chairs must be set up and taken down for the lunch. The floors need to be swept and washed if needed.
English as a Second Language - Mentors and tutors are required to do one on one instruction with adult students. Course work is supplied. This activity is offered at #248.
Clothing Exchange - This facility offers free clothing, household goods, and occasionally furniture. Volunteers are needed to sort and organize donations and be available when the public has access to the clothing exchange.
Special Events - Volunteer positions required for special events will be posted at Candora sites and in the newsletter. Please watch for upcoming events.
Computer Classes - Candora offers a free computer class once a week. The instructor needs a volunteer to assist with the students in the class.
Community Hours, Fine Options, Alternative Measures - The Candora Society is pleased to offer opportunities to community residents to complete these mandated hours. Participants must supply an hours sheet and discuss their offense with a supervisor. A staff member will be assigned as a contact. Hours will only be credited for actual hours worked.
